Monday 16th October 2023

At the start of the last week of the first half-term of the new school year, it feels like a good time to celebrate all the positive things that have happened at Wookey Primary School since the end of the summer break.

Celebrating is something we do well at Wookey, and our weekly celebration assemblies are a personal highlight, as I get to hear about the children’s achievements and successes in different aspects of school life.

In recent celebration assemblies there has been a lot talked about our school spirit. We have seen it in our cross-country runners, in the children who took part in the summer reading challenge, and perhaps most strikingly in the older children who choose to lead playtime and lunchtime games with the younger ones. I have been blown away by the positive feedback I have had from staff and children alike about our positive playtimes this term, and it is clear to anyone who spends time in our school that our children understand our school values and are proud to be part of Wookey Primary School.

At Wookey, we refer to our school spirit as ‘The Wookey Way’, and it is important to acknowledge that it is not only the children who contribute to ‘the Wookey way’. It is the staff too, and the care and support they show to all children simply cannot be questioned. It is a shame that you, as parents, cannot see the effort that the staff put in on a daily basis with all the children, and the lovely relationships that they forge with them. If you could, I am sure that you would share the admiration for them that I have.

However, the staff and children cannot claim all the credit for the positive half-term we have just had. It is down to you as parents and carers too! I can say from working in large and small schools that village schools such as ours are influenced more by the local community than larger ones. These influences can be positive and can help to build the school culture, or they can be negative and destructive. Although we have experienced both at Wookey in the past 12 months, I am encouraged that our school community is now an overwhelmingly positive one.

We are now about to move into what is probably the most exciting half-term of the school year as we build up to Christmas. Thank you in advance for your continued contribution to ensuring that ‘The Wookey Way’ continues to thrive, and please do come in to talk to any of us if you have any concerns.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr Marsh

Lego and Duplo donations needed

It would be very much appreciated if you could donate any unwanted Lego or Duplo to help the school run brick building sessions. Using bricks helps to develop communication, creativity, social skills and learning in a fun way. Any bricks not used in these sessions will be used in classes during wet breaks and after-school clubs. Donations of mini-figures, baseplates, blocks of any amount will be very gratefully received.

Cambodia Update

Miss Pidgeon and I had a very interesting and productive video call with the headteacher of Treak Community Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia this week. We found out a great deal about their organisation, and it seems we have more in common than you might have imagined. Mr Reynolds (school governor) who is currently out in Cambodia took part in the call too. The first step in our link between the two schools is going to primarily involve Oak Class, who are going to write letters to the children in Cambodia next week. They are very excited about this and I will keep you informed as we develop the link.

We have said a temporary goodbye to Mrs Valet today, as she has started her maternity leave. We will be thinking of her as she approaches her due date next month.

Health Guidance

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Professor Chris Whitty, and leading health professionals have written to schools, asking that we share NHS guidance with parents to remind you that children can attend school with minor coughs and colds, provided they do not have a fever. The guidance can be found by clicking this link: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/
