Friday 9th February 2024

Wow, the last few weeks of school were severely impacted by illness, weren't they?

It has not just been the children suffering with winter bugs - I can't remember a time with as much staff illness as we have been dealing with recently. Let's hope that with the 'firebreak' of last week (sorry to use a term associated with covid) we will be back to normal for the next half term.

Before half term,  as you know, we were celebrating Children's Mental Health week, and it was lovely to see the impact of the extra activities that were running. We do our very best to support the mental health of our children, and I wish we could dedicate this much time to such an important subject every week.

Thank you again to the parents who filled in the survey that we shared a couple of weeks ago. We have received some really useful feedback that will help shape our school development. The issue of what we provide for children to do at playtime came up in comments that were left on the survey and, following consultation with the children during CMH week, we have started to put some plans into action. Stay tuned for some big changes coming soon!

The last bit of news from me is to let you know that we have appointed Mrs Bev Davies as cover in the office whilst Lucy Bailey is on maternity leave. I am sure that you will make her feel welcome as the newest member of the Wookey team.

Author Visit

Local author and illustrator Rebecca Gryspeerdt will be visiting Rowan and Oak classes on Tuesday 20th February with her children’s book ‘Helpful Nell’.

The illustrated story is set in the Bishop’s Palace gardens in Wells and features the swans and cygnets plus the Town Crier.

Rebecca will read her book to the children, and they will learn about how she wrote and illustrated the story.

She will be signing copies of her book after school, and they will be available to buy for £7 each.  If your child would like to purchase a copy, please send the money in a named envelope before the 20th February.  There may be a few copies available on the day.

World Book Day 2024

World Book Day is taking place on Thursday 7th March this year.

We are going to continue our trend from recent years of asking the children (and yourselves) to be a bit creative for our dressing up theme for the day.

We would love to see the children come to school not dressed as a character from a book but instead as a type of word. For 2024 we would like to see them dressed as an adjective.

In the words of Corporal Jones from Dad's Army, a reference which really makes me seem old; "Don't Panic!" If you need a bit of inspiration, I have found a useful thread on Mumsnet which has loads of ideas on it. Click here to read it.

On the day itself we will be doing lots of activities linked to 'The Word Collector' by Peter Reynolds, so I would recommend that your child has a look at it before the day if it is in your collection at home.

Farm club is back!

Come and spend time looking after the animals at Wookey Farm on Mondays after school.

We have an added bonus of baby goats in March.

Booking is essential, so please do this through Wookey Farm Website

Wookey Farm Staff will walk children to the farm from school at 3:20. Pick up is at 4.45pm from the farm.

Any questions please contact Sarah on 07779 145441

A message regarding pupil absences

This is a polite reminder that, if your child is unwell and will not be attending school, please contact the school office to confirm this. A message sent to a class teacher via Seesaw will not be seen straight away, as the teachers will be busy preparing for the school day.

If you wish to apply for term time leave for your child, please complete a term time leave request form, a copy of which can be found here.
