Friday 14th June 2024

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Wells Cathedral School with a group of Year 5 and 6 students for their annual Primary School Cricket Festival. Unfortunately, the event saw a low turnout from other local schools, resulting in only a few teams competing.

At Wookey School, we take great pride in enhancing our children's experiences by embracing every opportunity that we believe will add value to their learning journey. The children performed exceptionally well in the three cricket matches they played, displaying impressive teamwork, leadership, and respect throughout the games.

This week, we were also visited by a representative from Wells Library, who introduced the annual summer reading challenge for children. For details on the Reading Challenge, please refer to the information below.

Sports Day

Just a reminder that our sports afternoon is scheduled for Thursday, July 4th this year. We're looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the school field starting at 1:15pm, and we're optimistic that the weather will be much better by that time!

Chess Club Update

I had a very productive meeting with Sasha Matlak from Wells Chess Club on Friday regarding the potential establishment of a weekly after-school chess club here. I am pleased to announce that the launch of our chess club is set for September. Please stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

A Reminder About School Lunches

Please be aware that, if no meals are booked for your child by lunchtime on a Wednesday, then we will be expecting them to be sent in with packed lunches for the following week.

Meals can now be booked up until the end of the summer term.  All booked lunches will need to be paid for in advance if your child is not in receipt of Free School Meals or Universal Free School Meals.

I spent an intriguing Friday afternoon with Chestnut Class this week, discovering the stories of the 39 residents of Wells who lost their lives during World War II. We used a resource on the Wells Museum Website called 'The Wells Museum War Memorial Project' and I wanted to share it with you here.

Wells War Memorial Project | Wells & Mendip Museum | Wells (wellsmuseum.org.uk)

Perhaps the most fascinating life story was that of Harry Patis, an ARP warden, who was the only Wells resident to be killed in action in Wells itself, when a bomb was dropped on his house by planes involved in the bombing of Bristol in 1944. Other notable stories include the Wells resident who died in Palestine while aiding Israeli refugees, and the female engineer, a descendant of Henry VII, who perished during a Warwick ASR1 aircraft test flight. I highly recommend exploring this fascinating historical archive.

A message regarding pupil absences

This is a polite reminder that, if your child is unwell and will not be attending school, please contact the school office to confirm this. A message sent to a class teacher via Seesaw will not be seen straight away, as the teachers will be busy preparing for the school day.

If you wish to apply for term time leave for your child, please complete a term time leave request form, a copy of which can be found here.
