Our football season has actually managed to gain some momentum over the last two weeks with three matches in quick succession.
The first of the three matches was against unbeaten Catcott School, who had won all 5 of their previous games, scoring 48 goals and conceding only 1. After a slow start to the game Wookey found themselves 2-0 down to an excellent Catcott team, but by half time we had drawn level at 2-2. This was followed by an evenly matched second half, with Catcott extending their score to 4 goals, and despite lots of pressure and one powerful shot rebounding back of the Catcott crossbar, Wookey were unable to add to their score at half time. With a bit of luck the score might have been different, but the Wookey team showed excellent spirit and never let their heads drop. They were very respectful in defeat and understood that they had given a good showing against excellent opposition.
The victory by Catcott meant that the league was won by them, but with second place still up for grabs our next match against West Pennard B followed very quickly. Despite once again starting slowly, and going 1-0 down very early on, Wookey dominated this match and we were only prevented from scoring more than five goals by some excellent saves from the West Pennard goalkeeper. The final score of this match was Wookey 5 West Pennard 2. Once again this match was played in excellent spirit and it was lovely to see the way that the two teams played hard but maintained their respect for each other.
This victory, plus another win (v Meare) which was awarded to us due to Meare cancelling on the morning of the match, meant that we headed into our third fixture of the last two weeks with second place in the league still very much up for grabs. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this match (the first of the season I have not been able to go to) so we relied totally on our dedicated parents to provide transport to Strode for this game. This would be an appropriate time to thank our parents for supporting the football team again this year as we wouldn't be able to take part in the league without you. I must also thank Mr Donnelly for taking on the coach / manager role again and giving up his valuable time, not just for the matches but also for weekly training sessions. We have one more match to go, on Thursday this week, and I am very excited to see if we can round off our football season in style. Come on Wookey, you can do it!
