As we are now a few weeks into the summer break I thought I would reflect on the last day of term. These are always a very emotional experience for us all, and this year was no different.
As you can see from the picture above, due to the extremely hot weather we asked the children to come into school wearing appropriately cool clothing, which certainly added to the end of term feel. The day started with our end of year celebration assembly, when awards were given to a large number of children for their efforts throughout the year. Perhaps the highlight of this assembly were the 'values awards' where we recognised the children who had personified our core school values of engagement, independence, respect and active learning throughout the academic year.
Following an extra long playtime, which gave the staff the final chance to say a proper goodbye to those adults who are leaving us at the end of the summer term. we then had our final hot lunch service from The French Kitchen. We are sad that they are no longer going to be providing our lunches from September, but excited to start working with Andre Wintersgill.
We then walked VERY slowly to the village hall for our final presentation of Shakespeare Rocks and our leavers' goodbyes. I must commend all the children for their effort in the performance - they were all very tired and quite emotional, but they came out and gave it 100%. Seeing them organising themselves behind the scenes was an amazing experience and a great example of our value of independence in action!
Finally we moved on to the main event - a chance to say a proper goodbye to a spectacular group of year 6 children. I wanted to do them justice in my leavers' speech, and I hope that I did, but the way they all took a turn to stand up and speak fondly about their experiences really brought a lump to the throats of everyone in attendance. I am not exaggerating when I say that these were the most thoughtful, mature speeches I have heard in my nearly 7 years at Wookey.
Following the main event, many of the children, and some of the staff, gathered in Wookey Hub for a little celebration. A celebration of the end of a journey and the beginning of another exciting adventure. We will miss the children, and the families that are leaving us.
Have a great summer everyone!
